Onzo, the company behind the award-winning Smart Energy Kit, has been honoured with a 2010 Greenbang Award for “Top Smart Grid Technology”.
Judges from the independent sustainable business advisory service praised the London-based start-up for its “array of energy management products and services” that help utilities build better relationships with their customers and consumers to improve their energy efficiency in the home.
The Greenbang awards celebrate the most forward thinking, innovative businesses whose projects are designed to create a sustainable business future.
The Smart Energy Kit (SEK) was launched in September in partnership with Scottish & Southern Energy (SSE), one of the world’s largest energy suppliers. Customers who sign up to SSE’s “iPlan” are given the kit free of charge.
The SEK gives consumers real-time information about how much electricity they are using in their home and how much it is costing them, helping people to cut their energy bills while doing their bit for the planet.
It comprises an in-home display, sensor and personalised website, which allows consumers to track their energy consumption over the past 30 days and compare their usage with similar sized households.
Joel Hagan, CEO of Onzo said: “We’re delighted that Onzo’s products and services have been recognised with this prestigious award. We take pride in the fact we have a user-friendly product that is not only attractive and easy to use, but is also supported by cutting edge technology, which can really help people drive down their energy use.
“With winter fuel bills rising because of the cold weather, there’s never been a better time for people to understand and manage their energy consumption.”
Dan Ilett, Research Director at Greenbang, said: “At a time when sustainable initiatives find themselves increasingly under pressure, it’s important to encourage and showcase some of the most forward-thinking businesses operating today.
“It was precisely because of this, that this year we decided to reward the very best initiatives that combine smart thinking, hard work, beautiful design and clever technology, in what has been a tough economic environment. Onzo’s smart energy kit fits the bill perfectly.”
He added: “As an advisory business that works with some of the biggest brands in the world, we believe that by showcasing some of the best initiatives, we can encourage innovation and set an important benchmark for the future.”
