In-flight games set for take-off - 05 Nov 2006

AIRLINE passengers could be playing computer games on seat-back consoles next year after a Scottish technology company raised money to develop and build in-flight entertainment systems.

AviIT plans to take on 20 staff after raising £700,000 from investors led by Edinburgh's Sigma Capital to finance its Blue Box entertainment system and other airline products

The Dunfermline company, which works with Virgin Atlantic and BMI, hopes to have Blue Box installed on aircraft by 2007. It is about a tonne lighter than traditional in-flight systems, provides better quality pictures and will give passengers access to games as well as films, TV shows and music.

David Brown, AviIT's chief executive, said:

"We realised we were getting swamped with interest, but did not have enough people to exploit the opportunities we had."

The company plans to take on up to 20 engineers and sales staff over the next year.
