Bury council officials enjoy constructive trip to Irwell View site

Kellen Homes and Sigma hosted a visit from Bury Council officials and the Portfolio Member for Housing for a behind-the-hoardings tour of 211 new homes at Irwell View, York Street in Bury.

The leading North West housebuilder welcomed Bury Councillor Clare Cummins and Paul Lakin, Executive Director of Place Bury, to the building site for the new scheme which will see two, three and four-bedroomed homes developed on the brownfield site in partnership with Sigma Capital Group. The homes will be built to rent under Sigma’s build-to-rent (BTR) brand Simple Life, providing much-needed, high quality, professionally managed rental housing for local people.

The officials were taken on a guided tour of site to see the homes in the early stages of construction all the way through to houses getting the final touches before being handed over to their new residents. The visiting group were impressed with the progress and commented on how well planned the development is with an elevated position, and how the homes are being delivered to a high standard making use of views and giving careful consideration to the neighbouring businesses and the existing residential community.

The council supported Kellen Homes with its application for Brownfield Housing Funding from the GMCA. The Brownfield Housing Fund provided a £1.95 million grant to remediate the land at York St.

Councillor Clare Cummins, Cabinet Member for Housing Services for Bury Council, said of the visit: “We are delighted to support this brownfield housing development which unlocks this site for family housing. It will help towards the council’s housing growth plans, meets local housing need and supports the diversification of the housing market in Radcliffe.

“This is one of several projects in the area helping to deliver the Radcliffe Regeneration Framework and it is a pleasure to come and see the building work and the homes taking shape. The homes are of a very high quality and the whole development has been thoughtfully planned to create a new neighbourhood and fit in with the existing community.”

Ian Kelley Chief Executive at Kellen Homes commented: “York Street is a superb site that marks another important milestone in our strong partnership with Sigma. We are creating a vibrant new neighbourhood delivering important new homes for local people on a former brownfield site. It’s a pleasure to welcome the local councillors to the site to see the modern design and build quality for themselves, and to get such positive feedback. This site is great news for the local economy and people of Bury.”

Lee Catterall, Development Director at Sigma commented: “We’re really excited to be part of this new neighbourhood with our partners, Kellen Homes. Our new Simple Life homes will provide vital, accessible housing for the local community. We’re looking forward to offering renters of Bury a high quality, professional approach to renting, bettering their housing options locally and considerably contributing to the housing market demands.”

Kellen Homes secured planning consent in December 2022 for the scheme which includes the creation of almost 12 acres of public open space and a mix of detached and semi-detached, privately rented homes. Kellen Homes will make a contribution for offsite affordable homes and highways improvements as part of the planning approval. The site is bordered by green space to the east, existing homes to the south and the river Irwell to the west.
